Racing 190sl prepared by Redcastle Classics near Cardiff190SL Rennwagen project

This has been one of the most interesting projects over the past couple of years. An existing customer wanted to replicate the 1956 Macau grand prix winning car and we were tasked with undertaking the transformation.

Avid Mercedes followers will have read about this in the April 2008 edition of the Mercedes Enthusiast magazine, but the work saw a fairly tired road car transformed into the black racer. Great attention to detail in the rebuild saw the original car’s cutdown doors replicated as well as performing a number of mechanical modifications similar to those developed by the factory.Rennwagen in race trim with new tonneau

The car was also featured in the magazine Octane in 2008.

The best part however was throughout the rebuild, the owner managed to trace the winning driver of the 190SL that won the1956 Macau Grand Prix – Doug Steane.  We were privileged to be visited by Doug at a number of occasions during the rebuild and also to see him drive the car at the Shelsey Walsh hillclimb in 2008.190sl rennwagen - restored interior and seats by Redcastle Classics

The car is now scheduled to take part in the Top Hat race at Silverstone in August 2009, hopefully to be driven by the ex Ford Works driver Gillian Goldsmith.
